How to Listen:
Thank you Carlton Reid for being the rational voice and having a logical perspective. Neil B.’s opinion that the media is not at fault is absurd when the media whips people up in a frenzy with “allegations” and “suspicions” of doping. When the media is not counter balancing their reporting, they are contributing to the problem.
I thought the reference to Nairo Quintana as Froome’s pet was rather inappropriate and distasteful. In my opinion it borders on racist.
Ditto to Tam’s comment about Carlton being the voice of reason
Tim,
Thanks for your comments. I’ve known Jim Moss for a very long time and I am 100% certain that he was just trying to make a joke and that he did not mean to offend. I am also certain that he couldn’t discriminate or be racist if he tried. That being said, I do understand your feelings about his word choice, and for that I am very sorry. I hope you will continue to listen.
David
I believe Bob Roll is well versed in French and other European languages. (He speaks Spanish fluently. Enough to translate, on the spot, interviews of Quintana and Contador.)
I’m fairly certain his former pronunciation of “Tour DAY France” was a carry over from when he was a rogue cyclist on that American 7-11 team. The French didn’t really want them there, so he would purposely mispronounce it to get on their nerves. Then it became kind of a trademark for him. I think he talked about this once a few years ago.
Also, I wonder if I’m the only one who “TiVo’s” the tour. I don’t deal with all of those commercials (except to wear out my skip ahead button). It also allows me to go to work when I need to, and watch the (delayed) live coverage on my own time. The only down side is I need to limit my social media to avoid spoilers.
Appreciate breaching the subject of NBC Sports not covering La Course. This is fantastic. But I don’t really understand the argument that even dudes who race bikes have to work and therefore can’t watch ladies race. I don’t get the point. I work full time. I race. I want to watch women’s racing.
With the commentary about Froome and urine, how come we aren’t hearing of other riders who were back-splashed as well? Unless the offender has impeccable aim, Froome, riding with the peloton at 25-30+ mph, may have received the vast amount of the urine toss but others would have also corroborated his story as they would have also received at least part of the spray. Since we are not hearing these stories, was this a marketing tactic by Sky to sideline the U.S. Postal tactics/doping allegations?
I don’t Tivo the Tour because I am sure I will learn the results during the day, thereby spoiling my viewing. I either watch live, or I read the articles later.
I sometimes think the Tour would be more exciting if the race was done on points for the overall winner. I know there is a points race but for the overall I think it might be more interesting to give it to someone who is more of an all around cyclist. Am I missing something in my thoughts?
Pete – the answer to your suggestion is in your suggestion: “there is a points race”
The cumulative time thing sorts the fastest overall rider, and depending on the route around France in any particular year, can be wide-ranging and good for finding the best all-rounder.
